Monday 23rd May Great Somerfords Moor lake

Ian had wanted to catch some tench and there cannot be a better water to fish then the Moor lake at Great Somerford.

The lake is about 8 acres in size and produces plenty of tench to 8lbs. There is little weed but plenty of food for them to grow on. We agreed to meet near to the fishery.

We were soon on the fishery which as per normal was pretty well empty of other anglers. The swim choice is quite easy as it allowes a couple of anglers and 4 rods to cover the area where the tench patrol. It was very very windy on the Sunday and this must surely stire the fish into feeding. However it was a cold wind.

Our choice of methods was method mix and in-line feeder.

We prebaited with hemp which usually does the trick in attracting in the tench.

Within 30 minutes Ian had a screaming bite which turned out to be a tench of 3lbs 9oz or so, which is small for the lake.

Where's the tench competition put an X where you think it is!!!!!

We didn’t take a photo of this fish as we were sure to catch more.

The morning passed to afternoon and we decided to try the next lake and sure enough the tench were feeding however they were all small fish of a few pounds.

A change of method to a helicopter rig produced some bites, but they were very difficult to hit. The fish became the “mystery fish”. However eventually one was hit and a small perch came to the net. Then a small roach. Then the bites dried up. We fished until 9pm and no other bites came along.

We had plan “B” for tomorrow, Horseshoe  lake.
