Great carp action on floating baits

After my assaults on the tench or the non action in Kent it was time to obtain a bend in the rod. Now Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley had a right result earlier in the week. The sun had come out and he was off to fish a local water which contains some good size carp. He normally waits until the first really hot day of the year before going. The temps got to 22c and he had one bite for the entire day but what a fish it was 40lbs 3oz and this continued his celebration for his 6oth the previous day. What a stunning carp and a new pb.

Andy’s 40lbs 3oz carp

With things hotting up with the Tench Fishers fish-in next week there is so much preparation that I couldn’t justify going to Kent so I arranged to join in the fun floater fishing for the carp with Andy. We fished a different lake this time. The morning was misty and cold but that didn’t stop the carp from surface feeding as the water was warm. There were fish feeding every where we put in the floaters. I think it was second or 3rd cast that had me playing my first carp. It was a reasonable double and put up a most magnificent tussle on 8lb line. Andy was giggling at the fight and the rod bent double. At last it was netted however it didn’t count as it was hooked on the nose and not the mouth.

Look at that bend in the rod

However it didn’t take me long to hook and land another one. The size of the fish in the lake went to about 19lbs or so. Many we landed were between 8lbs and 14lbs. Andy was having a great time landing carp after carp. The sun came out after about midday making it very pleasant

The biggest for me during the morning was 15lbs 8oz.

It was arm aching stuff landing one fish after another. There were a few lulls in the feeding in my swim however Andy’s swim just kept giving. I think he got to about 17 or so for the morning and then departed elsewhere for the afternoon. I went and took a look at another lake. The carp were on the surface and feeding however there were several anglers floater fishing too so I returned to the other lake. Andy had one largest carp out of just over 20lbs.

On returning to the other lake the catch rate continued for me. There were some pretty carp being caught and it’s not all about size.

Nice looking carp

At least I was getting that bend in the rod that had eluded me in Kent.

Back of the net

The day was very warm now at about 23c and the carp kept coming. The last fish of the day as I had set a target of 20 fish was also the largest for me at 17lbs 10oz.

Biggest at 17lbs 10oz

So this was a fantastic day for me as I had not floater fished for carp for 5 years or more I would say.

Thanks very much Andy for a superb day fishing.
