Sam and Henry and a great day out.

For a birthday present these two chaps were given a days coaching with me. After talking to Sam’s mum we decided to start at the very basics and try to get them interested.

Well the day was to run something like this. We would fish a small commercial fishery near me to learn how to float fish, play land and unhook fish. The object was for them to become self sufficient at this.

We started by finding the depth of the lake and then went through the steps needed when you start fishing.

They did say that they were so excited that they couldn’t sleep the night before. Didn’t tell them that I too get excited the night before about fishing even at my age.

Well before long they were catching fish on a regular basis. Baiting the hook with maggots and having a wonderful time.

We covered casting techniques and knots etc.

They were having a ball.

The second part of the day was to fish for chub on the river using floating crust. This proved to be excellent.

8 chub were caught to just over 4lbs. The only thing I will add was that I cast out and hooked the fish and they went on to land them. It was terrific fun to see the swirling chub coming up for the crust.

You could see the chaps were very excited by this.

Just for the final part of the day I suggested we fish a pool where I know there are a few trout and sure enough each hooked and landed a couple of rainbows, so they each had something for the evenings BBQ.

I couldn’t have wished two better behaved chaps, helpful and willing to learn.

When I asked if they enjoyed the day they replied that they didn’t know fishing was so exciting.

Next step is for them to use the floating crust technique for carp on a commercial fishery.

Sam’s mother said he couldn’t stop talking about his day the following day.

Happy days
