June 24th 2 carp off the top in the rain

I bailiff a small lake that is a mixed fishery close to where I live, well it’s 6 minutes in the car. The lake has some good carp to over 20lbs in there and many other doubles.
With the rain pouring down ( I wish they hadn’t mentioned the drought) I headed to the lake to check permits and day tickets. I thought I would take the floater rod to see if I could get some of the carp feeding on the lake. Sure enough they were on the top and feeding in many swims around the lake. There were 7 anglers there and after checking to see all was well I headed to the quietest part of the lake where the stream flowed in, it’s quite shallow too. I put out a good few dog mixers towards a very small island.
Soon there were a good few carp slurping them down. I fired out a few more over the next 30 minutes or more to get them confident.
Then out went the rig which was a Korda Kruiser with 8lb main line and 7lb Drennan double strength hooklink of about 1 meter long. On the size 10 hook I banded a mixer. Oh it’s important to make sure that the reel line and hook link line float, this I do by greasing the line with a float-ant material.

The rain poured down as I stood there watching and waiting. I had a few false takes and nudges from the carp, then one took it, self hooking itself in the process. The rod I use is a very soft 2.5lb test curve carp rod. This takes on a great curve from a fighting carp. These little carp fight like their life depended on it. Soon I had the carp in the net. A stunning mirror of about 9lbs or so. As I’m playing the fish I could still see others taking the mixers oblivious to what’s going on. I soon unhooked and slip it back into the lake.

I try to recast the rig past the feeding area and draw it back over the fish. In no time at all I had another take from a fish that fought really well. I thought it might have been one of the ghost carp as it was very light in colour. However on landing it, it proved to be a mirror carp of about the same size as the one before but very light in colour. Just one or two scales.along it’s flank.
By now it was 9.15pm and time to off the water. The rain had been relentless throughout the 1.5hrs I had been fishing. I was surprised to see so many carp on the surface.
Some of the other anglers had some of the surface too.
