H.Avon and a difficult day

I’ve not been fishing the H.Avon of late due to guiding obligations. See the previous blog.

The river had been low and some huge barbel having been putting in an appearance. Me though have been trying for some huge chub. I started off fishing one swim which has produced some large chub and barbel. I saw a couple of barbel but nothing big and the same goes for the chub. I stayed there for 3 hours when I thought it just wasn’t going to happen. I moved and walked a fair amount of river and found a swim where I saw a huge chub well perhaps a 7lber.

I literally bumped into John McGough in a swim where I was looking for another big chub I had seen before. He was chasing an enormous barbel in the swim. I stayed and chatted for a while then decided to return to the swim where I had seen the very large chub. I was using the pellet and hemp approach. The pellets were from West Country baits large pellets. These are about the best you can get for chub and barbel.

Well I baited up and sure enough the chub kept coming and feeding on a regular basis. John was talking to Mike Window who was fishing close by when the rod arched over and a chub fought well on the other end.

John came by to take the photo’s. It was long and very lean 22.5 inches. I have had 6lb plus fish at this length.

22.5 inches long and only 5lbs 4oz

A couple more small chub came my way, before I pulled out of a barbel towards the end of the evening. Mike caught a chub before I left for home at about 8.30pm.
