Great session for 17 tench and 6 carp for Mark

Mark has just returned to tench fishing and wanted to spend some time understanding rigs and feature finding. He is already an experienced big fish man having some huge barbel to his credit. So no pressure on me then!

We agreed to meet at a lake which I had fished just weeks before. It’s about 20 acres in size with a good head of tench and some carp.

We met at 6am very much looking forward to landing a few tench. I had arrived a little earlier to see where the fish were. I found a swim with fizzing tench and the odd one rolling so this was to be our base for the day.

We were using a method feeder rig with plastic casters and the usual plastic red maggots and an inline feeder. On one rod we also used a worm heli rig.

The feed going out in the spomb was hemp with dead red maggots plus a few casters.

The weather for the day said breezy with some cloud plus a chance of the odd shower. The air temperature was about 8c lower than the previous days so I hoped that this would spur the tench into feeding.

The distanced fished was 18 yds and 24 yds which was pretty much close to a couple of weed beds. I let Mark feel where the weed was and when it finished using the feature finding float and lead.

So with the rods cast out we settled back ready for the action. It was now I was experienced something new. As the breeze blew into our faces it was quite cool. However wearing shorts you could feel warm air like a hair drier blowing on my legs. The breeze was picking up the warm lake water temperature which was considerably high than the ambient air temp. Very strange!

It wasn’t long before we had our first action as a tench took one of the baits and away it went the alarms bleeping well.

So no blanking!

Little did we know how the day was going to pan out. The fish started to roll in the swim and with the wind blowing into our faces we could hear them.

Steadily during the day the bites came and fish were landed. Most of the methods and rigs caught fish without one being outstanding.

Mark playing a tench

Mark though was very surprised by the number we caught on the worm rig. He would be using this in the future for sure.

Every time we made a brew it usually meant a fish or two came along.

A fellow mate and Tench Fisher came along for a look at the lake and was surprised to see us there. As we continued fishing and catching a good few carp and tench. The carp were mostly small stocked ones.

John was astonished at the rate we were getting bites. It was so exciting he stayed for a couple of hours to see the action.

He netted a carp while I played with the GOPRO camera. Sorry about the music Mark still learning!

The fish came on most of the methods and tench were rolling over the baits. Happy Days

John said his goodbye and we continued to fish landing more tench. Mark I hope was having a great time.

Time was going on and we were both enjoying the moments of excitement. None of the tench were huge but mostly between 4-5lbs. It made for a very special day.

At about 8.30pm we packed away the tackle and did a little more feature finding work so that Mark could feel the difference of what the lake bed felt on gravel weed and silt.

I had a fabulous day and Mark was knackered after doing all of the work. I think he was well satisfied with the day.
