Friday November 23rd time for a change, perching.

My Mate Andy has been promising a trip to a commercial fishery where there have been some large perch coming out for a good few years. He arrived a little earlier than me and bless saved the best swim for me. Well he said it was the best swim!

Our bait was to be prawns supplemented with a sprinkle of maggots to attract small fish into the area. There was one other guys perch fishing.

Well I’m not going to say too much as this chap had one of 2lbs 15oz and Andy had one of about 2lbs. He caught his on live bait, well he caught the roach on maggots (first one had caught). He put this on a ledger and watched as the roach activity increased just before the perch took a hold.

Me I blanked in the certain swim, the very first time anyone has blanked. I must be a jinx I guess. Really liked the place and will return again when the perch have moved back in.

Since then the rivers have been over the banks and I was supposed to be guiding on Sat and again Tuesday but for safety reasons called them off. It’s Thurs today and the rivers are receding and clearing quickly because of the frosts. Think it might be pike fishing time tomorrow as I looked at the river today and it’s going down and clearing. They should be hungry by now.

I had a look at a couple of old Bernard Venables short films on trotting for roach. They were great for the early days. I really liked the stop in fishing to light up the pipe and reflect on what’s happened.

Have a look and enjoy.

Here are two for chub too!
