Friday 20th January Bristol Avon

I’ve been thinking for quite sometime about fishing for the chub on the lower Bristol Avon. Earlier in the week I walked a section which does hold some good fish. Last year a 6lbs 14oz chub was caught in a match so I do know that they are there.

With the river being low and clear it’s perfect time to catch chub. My preferred method for this is cheese paste. My thoughts were to cast under any likely looking areas that might just find a chub at home.

I arrived and soon found a beautiful swim where there were a few trees overhanging the river. It was here that I started fishing at 4pm. My aim is to fish it for a couple of hours when possible. I dropped a few small balls of cheese under the trees and then cast out using 3 swan shot and a 2ft length of 4.12oz hooklink. Main line was 6lbs.

The area just screamed chub, however with one small pull on the rod tip after 2 hours  it was time to go home.

It’s only 4 miles from home so if the weather continues dry then I’ll pay this section a few more visits during this winter.
