A local lake Boyd Valley

I had arranged to meet Nick for a spot of carp fishing on a local lake only 1.5 miles away from home. Boyd lake is a small well stocked lake with carp up to about 16lbs. It’s fed from a spring and it was lower than normal probably from the lack of rain we have had recently. There are roach, bream, carp, barbel and chub in there.

We were going to start off by fishing on the bottom with a method feeder. We were fishing with pellets on the hook and a method feeder with halibut ground bait and several different sized pellets mixed in.

There was plenty of bites but not from the carp. We even fed some hemp which is the number one attractant. It looked as though the roach loved the feed.

We also fished a float rod, however the carp were not playing ball.

Nick suggested we move to the other end of the lake where carp could be caught off the top. He had caught some good fish from the bay we fished. A few dog biscuits soon had a few taking them from the surface. Nick tried with his normal single banded biscuit on the hook and they were spooky. He missed several fish.

So we came to the conclussion that a controller and a hair rig approach might just work. The wind blew into the small bay making the spotting of the buscuit very difficult. The controller did help considerably with identifying bites.

During the few hours we were there he caught 6 carp up to about 9lbs plus.

Nick had a good 6 fish off the top with this one being the largest.

Nick is a good fisherman and his philosophy on fishing is spot on. He enjoys the chase and the playing of the fish. Nicks time is precious as he is a professional photographer and can only manage a few hours each week. But he will enjoy his hours on the bank that’s for sure.

Should you want someone to take the photo’s at a wedding then look at his website.
