6hrs on the H.Avon and two chub to show for my efforts

I wanted to get back onto the Avon again to try for the barbel and chub. The weather forecast said heavy showers moving east. I was hoping to avoid them and went down there later than normal.

I started fishing at 2pm in a swim that I didn’t think had been fished before. Dropping some hemp and pellets into a deep glide under my near bank. I lowered the lead and bait down carefully hoping that the floating weed wouldn’t interfere too much with the line. I needn’t have worried as after 30 mins I recast again. Then again 30 mins later and then the tip flew around and I was playing a lively chub that wanted to find the far side weed. It wasn’t the largest chub in the world however any chub over 5lbs is welcomed.

5lbs 2oz chub

5lbs 2oz chub

I was then in two minds what to do and decided to head back to the barbel swim. Sure enough two of them came out to feed on nothing I had put in. So what was it. I decided not to introduce any food and see what happens.

Well other than a small 4lb chub nothing, although they came out and touched the line a few times then just held back under the far bank-side vegetation. I didn’t want to crash the weights on their heads preferring to tempt them out. This cat and mouse episode continued for 90 minutes or so and it was time to pack up. These fish are really spooky fish.

So not the best of days and 6hrs fishing is not enough.
