30th November Bristol Avon chub

I was going to fish for the day today but at the last minute yesterday I ended up at Watford watching Bristol City. Not the best match in the world but still unbeaten in 6 games now and a 2-2 draw see’s us out of the relegation zone.

So I was up later than planned. I decided to fish with cheese paste today as with the recent rain we had yesterday I thought the river may be up a a little or even coloured.

Arriving at 12.00 noon the river was crystal clear and still very low.

The rig I was going to use was to be a very light quiver tip rod and 6lb main line. Because the flow was minimal I could just about get away with 2 swan shot link ledger and a 4lb hooklink and size 10 Drennan hook.

The cheese paste I keep in the freezer and bring it out when required. The paste is very easy to make. Mine is a pastry and extra mature cheese recipe. I also add some buteric acid which does reek terribly of a smell the chub just can’t resist.

I haven’t done so yet but I’m thinking of adding some crushed source boilies to the paste too. this will give it extra attraction in flavour and colour.

There are plenty of leaves on the river bed so I tend to try the slightly faster water, but with some cover overhead.

The rig looks something like this.

All you do is press the paste into the cage and it stays there wonderfully with the hook unmasked.

It seemed to work very well as each swim I fished in I caught chub, however no real good fish came my way. Never the less it was an entertaining afternoon until the rain arrived. As they say though “mustn’t grumble” we certainly need this.

So as the light faded and the rain pouring I started my journey home.

On arriving home some 15 miles away the roads were dry, no rain here today!

The river looked like spring today with the new weed growth!!!!!!!!
